Matress Disposal London
Why have mattresses become so expensive to dispose of in London today.
As you may or may not know, most waste these days is shredded and used as bio-waste as opposed to being sent to landfill. This is a great way to make electricity from burning it to create steam and ultimately turn turbines and make electricity. Moving away from burning coal and using bio-waste is a much more environmentally friendly method.
So the question is what do mattresses have in this equation? The simple answer is they jam up the shredders that shred the waste. As the shredding mechanism turns the wires on the springs wrap around the shaft that drives the shredder. After a while, it becomes jammed and it can ruin the machine. Although most of the time it just means downtime to repair it and this holds up the operation while costing money.
Because of that cost we generally find them flytipped near communal bins. Rest assured they normally get put in the correct channels and avoid going to landfill. It's unfair that other people land up with fitting the bill though.
Most companies like All Your Junk have to pay to have these either put in landfill, which is not favourable, or pay someone to strip the wires out from the foam to separate the two. This can take up to 2 hours on a single double mattress. Hence the £25 per mattress charge to recycle correctly. Separating the 2 is ideal as the metal gets recycled and the foam is burned in the bio-waste process. Unfortunately this means we have to charge this in addition to or usual costs.
